CA Weighs State Registry for Animal Abusers:

  • A proposed law would require convicted animal abusers to register with a statewide database similar to the national database for sex offenders. Many proponents of the registry believe animals have the same basic rights as humans. California was a pioneer in establishing a database for convicted sexual predators. Now, the state may be on the verge of doing something similar for animal abusers. Read the rest of the story HERE
  • Animal abusers may soon be on the same level as sex offenders in getting listed on an online registry, complete with their addresses and where they are employed, if one California legislator has his way. On Friday, state Sen. Dean Florez (D-Shafter) announced a bill for a statewide registry in California. If adopted, it would create the nation's first criminal registry for animal abusers. Read the article and take the poll HERE
  • Editorial perspective: Oh heck, why dither: The proposal by state Sen. Dean Florez (D-Shafter) to create a registry of animal abusers -- to be funded by a new tax on pet food -- is a cockamamie idea.  Read the rest of the editorial HERE.

Doggie Horoscopes:  From the lighter side of life, read your pooch's horoscope from Animal Planet HERE

Metaldehyde Toxicity: In California, snail bait constitutes the most common poisoning agent in our dogs.  Not that malicious poisoning is the issue; most cases are inadvertent as many gardens have both dogs and snail problems. Snail bait is commonly formulated in pellets (which can resemble dog food) and flavored with molasses or bran to attract snails (and unfortunately is attractive to dogs as well - unlike cats, dogs can taste 'sweet'). Read more HERE.

Cancer: It strikes terror in our hearts when we heard this 6-letter word, be it in a loved one or family pet... The great advances in veterinary care for our pets have created older-aged pets which get dementia and cancers previously not seen... How can you tell if your pet has cancer?  What can you do to fight it?  This very informative article has been archived on our website now...

California Pet Doomsday Clock:  Currently, 786 companion pets are put down each day in the state of California - the DAILY cost of feeding, housing and/or adoption/euthanasia is $392,671.   We used to believe the unwanted overpopulation was caused by owners who do not spay or neuter, but in the recent years, many owners have stepped up to the responsibilities of owning a pet by no longer leaving their companion pet intact.  Now we also know that many people want a puppy, but within 2 years of their decision, they will dump that animal in the local shelter -- for various reasons (no time, puppy impulse decision, not enough knowledge to properly train, dramatic life changes, etc.). The CA Doomsday Tally Counter/Clock changes every day to reflect how many pets have died and what the cost to CA taxpayers has been so far this year - PLEASE forward this webpage onto other friends and relatives who are considering purchasing a pet at a petshop or from a backyard breeder or over the Internet!  Thank you!

What does your dog say about you?: A delightful article written by the Pet Place staff and depending upon your favorite breed, a description of you as a person might possibly be provided!  The Chihuahua is #10 and other than the choice of favorite TV show, I thoroughly agree with their description!  :)

Updates:

  • BabyLove continues to do well - she has regained most of the fur on her body now and handled being spayed last week very well - her blog and photos are HERE.  You can help sponsor BabyLove's medical costs HERE.
  • RubyDee and her puppies will be ready for adoption on March 27th... RubyDee has been an outstanding mother and we have just started weaning the puppies.  They have gotten their first series of shots and all three are absolutely gorgeous puppies.  RubyDee is just the friendliest and most loving dog you can ever find - she will make a great family addition to someone who has young children at home.
  • Please help network Sunshine and Kelly: Our two oldest dogs in the rescue could certainly use a great home - Kelly and Sunshine both have been with us for a very long time... they keep getting passed by at adoptions.

REMEMBER ALWAYS TO ADOPT AND NOT SHOP!  THE DOGS WILL THANK YOU FOR IT!
