TLC Newsletter - 3/19/10        Back to the newsletter page

It's that time of year again (sigh)...    With the Easter holiday fast approaching us, adults are buying bunnies, chicks, ducks, etc. as live gifts.  This is NEVER a good idea regardless of the time of year for the rabbit rescues are overwhelmed year round along with the shelters.  Even these marketed  'miniature bunnies' usually grow into huge (and no longer 'too cute') adults... Just today an illegal vendor was busted in Los Angeles for illegal animal sales - Read the rest of the story

Reporting Cruelty FAQs (courtesy of the ASPCA): A pretty good overall perspective of what is cruelty and what steps you can take to report it is at the ASPCA's website HERE
Special note:
remember when you donate to the ASPCA, the donations are going to the national organization - your local SPCAs do not share in any of your kindness.  If you want your donation to stay 'at home' and help animals locally, you must donate directly to your local SPCA.  Incidentally, Pet-Abuse.com has now mapped about 50% of the cruelty cases they have in their databases for California - you can see the interactive map at their website HERE.

Should there be an animal abuser registry here in California?  The biggest stumbling block is how to fund it - Time.com has a pretty good article on this subject HERE.

And they say dogs are dumb?  The patient was only slightly injured when he limped into a hospital in the northwest New Mexico city of Farmington.  The only problem was, he was a dog.  Read the rest of the story HERE.

Today's Tip:  Attach a split ring through the end of your dog's leash around the hand-held loop along with a carbineer... you would be absolutely AMAZED how often this 'extra set of hands' will come in handy if these two items are hanging off of the leash!  Both items are easily found in any hardware or discount retail store... and we can't tell you how many times we have been able to quickly attach a dog's leash to a bicycle rack in order to chase down another dog, attached our house key to the carbineer to take a walk without so much stuff in our hands, used the carbineer to hook a doggie bag pickup container, etc.

BabyLove:  We are VERY happy to be able to share that BabyLove got a fantastic home last weekend -- the first weekend she came up for adoption.  Her new name is "Vida" ('life') but she'll always be the BabyLove to us... smile... She is truly one of those very special dogs that come along occasionally and just creeps into your heart!  Her blog will stay up indefinitely, so if you haven't seen or read it, this is where it is on the Internet.

Wall of Shame:  There's an update on Izzy from her new owner HERE; bizarre case of animal cruelty in Boston - Peke was killed by his own fur - story is HERE.

Upcoming adoptions:  For those of you all who have been following the birth of RubyDee's puppies at TLC (her blog and photos are here), the puppies are adorable and ready for adoption soon!  RubyDee is an exceptional mother and truly a genuine loving spirit in her own right and will make someone a great family dog!  RubyDee and her puppies (JohnnyCash, JuneCarter and JerryLee) will be ready for adoption on Saturday, March 27th at PETCO.  For those who have fallen in love with our TLC mascot (Nacho), JohnnyCash reminds us a lot of Nacho when he was a puppy.  Puppies ALWAYS adopt fast, so if you are interested, please make sure to get your adoption application right away.  We have some great dogs available for adoption now -- as well as some 'TLC older timers' we haven't been able to find a furever home for - check out the TLC homepage and see all of their gorgeous faces!

REMEMBER ALWAYS TO ADOPT AND NOT SHOP!  THE DOGS WILL THANK YOU FOR IT!

This is an opt-in newsletter, so you're free to come and go as you please.  We're hoping you'll be with us for a very long time.  Feel free to pass on our newsletters to other dog lovers... and encourage them to visit us as well!  If you like to suggest a topic or have a question, please contact us.  We'd LOVE to hear from you!
