Hot
Days of Summer are here:
Yesterday evening we found a young Chihuahua
pup in a locked SUV in the parking lot of a
large local retail store. Alerted by the
pup's intense crying, we purposefully waited
to make sure he was not in that car too long.
After 15 minutes and no owner still in sight,
we asked the store's manager to make an
announcement. About 5 minutes later, two
young children came out with keys for the
vehicle. Angry, the older boy snatched
up the puppy once he unlocked the SUV and
complained bitterly about having to come
outside to attend to the puppy.
It does NOT
take long for the inside of a car to heat up,
even in cool weather - neither children nor
animals should be left unattended in a parked
vehicle! We kept copies of UAN flyer
(link listed below) in our vehicles and when
needed, have left them on the windshield of
vehicles!
-
Facts: A little heat outside a car can
quickly make it very hot inside. On a
summer's day of only 85 degrees
Fahrenheit, for example, even keeping the
windows slightly open won't stop the
inside temperature from climbing to 102
degrees in 10 minutes, and to 120 degrees
in 20 minutes. A dog whose body
temperature rises to 107-108 degrees will
within a very short time suffer
irreparable brain damage — or even death.
UAN's "Don't Leave Me in Here — It's Hot!"
flier has saved countless animals' lives
over the years. (source
and the flyer to print out)

California's legal take on this topic:
It is prohibited to "Leave or confine an
animal in any unattended motor vehicle
under conditions that endanger the health
or well-being of an animal due to heat,
cold, lack of adequate ventilation, or
lack of food or water, or other
circumstances that could reasonably be
expected to cause suffering, disability,
or death to the animal." Any peace
officer. humane officer or animal control
officer can take whatever reasonable
steps are necessary to remove an
animal from the vehicle. (fines
and statue details). Why
potentially kill an animal or have a
damaged window?
