TLC Newsletter - August 12, 2009        Back to the newsletter page

Jayda - Many of you all have been following Jayda's progress via her blog - http://tlc-jayda.blogspot.com/   If you haven't, she had her first 'visiting day' with her new furever owners, Dawn and John yesterday - it went excellent!  Jayda's next check-up with Dr. Novy is on August 31st and we're keeping our fingers crossed that the pin can be removed at that time! X~X

Ruby, Kimberly and Gorgeous won great furever homes this past weekend - CONGRATULATIONS to one and all!  Gorgeous and Thor are still too tiny to be speutered, so they'll be with their foster mom for a few more weeks but Jayda's puppies are going in to be spayed on Friday.  If the puppies are feeling up to it, they'll be at adoptions on Saturday - if not, the following weekend and available for adoption then.  Jayda's puppies are using the pitty pads for the most part and are nothing but bundles of fluff!   This week they've had another new item to learn about - collars!  Some handled that weird thingie around their neck well - others weren't too happy about it!  ;)

Dogs are as smart as toddlers (like we didn't already know this???): The canine IQ test results are in: Even the average dog has the mental abilities of a 2-year-old child.  The finding is based on a language development test, revealing average dogs can learn 165 words (similar to a 2-year-old child), including signals and gestures, and dogs in the top 20 percent in intelligence can learn 250 words.  Read more of the article at MS-NBC HERE.

AKC "CGC" program - We have started including information in our adoption packets about the 'Canine Good Citizen' program run by AKC.  Even if your pooch is not a purebred, you can put them through this program.  Basically it is a 10-point test that most well mannered dogs already know: sitting politely, walking through a crowd, etc. but in detail, you can find all 10 points on their website HERE. Once your pooch passes and has their CGC certificate, many hotels will allow dogs to stay  that don't normally, those interested in doing pet therapy with their pooch find doors opening for them to participate in this great community endeavor and so many other items too numerous to mention!  Eric Letendre has a good video online HERE that describes the 10 points in detail (with tips as well).  Eventually we hope to be doing CGC evaluations at PETCO in Moorpark as well.  We at TLC strongly encourage every TLC dog or puppy owner to look into this program and create a world of great canine citizens in our own little neck of the woods!

Stem Cell Therapy News: Veterinarians are starting to use stem-cell therapy to treat dogs.  While there is numerous owner recommendations for this form of treatment, over 1500 vets are now licensed to administer stem-cell therapy.  Begun by Vet-Stem located in Poway, CA, about 80% of the owners report positive effects - more details at MSNBC HERE.

Bringing Up Puppy (but it's just not for puppies ONLY) - Dr. Deena B. Case-Pall holds a free class on the first Monday evening of each month at 8:10PM (Conejo Valley Veterinary Hospital, 1850 Thousand Oaks Blvd - call 805-491-2337 to reserve your place).  The free class is designed for those you have a puppy up to 5 months old, have their first dog (any age) or are thinking of getting a dog.  For more in-depth details, see the flyer HERE.

How Young Is Your Dog?  Take the free test online HERE to determine the true age of your pooch.  Gone is the myth that one dog year is equal to seven human years... each breed ages differently and your pooch may be younger (or older) than you imagined!
