TLC Newsletter - 8/28/09
Back to the
newsletter page
I'm VERY
sorry for the newsletter not getting out on
time this week - it has been an INSANE 10 days
(more on this further down). Since our
last newsletter, Elvis, Joy, Hope and Faith
have all won furever homes with great
families!!! Congratulations to their new
families and we wish all four puppies long
healthy and happy lives! It's amazing
when you look at the TLC "Success
Page" and see so many beautiful and happy
TLC dogs and puppies! Can you spot
yours?
Jayda:
Jayda's had the pin in her leg pulled out
early as it began to work its way down, trying
to protrude out of the bottom of its position,
but had not broken through the skin yet.
She sees Dr. Novy on Monday for his assessment
and next step in the game plan for Jayda to
regain full use of that hind leg (keeping our
fingers crossed here ~xx~), and we will know
at that time if another surgery is needed
(hopefully).
Cody:
Now for the insanity of the past 10 days - On
August 20th, late at night one of our
volunteers came across what she thought was a
bag of trash on the road until it picked its
head up and she realized it was a dog.
Apparently it had JUST been hit (hit-and-run,
left for dead), and she put the car in reverse
and backed up to find the dog (now named
"Cody") with both rear legs out of the hip
sockets, blood streaming from its mouth.
Moorpark police were called - long story short
- the volunteers rushed the dog to animal ER
and then spent the rest of that night putting
up flyers, trying to locate the dog's owner
while staying in touch with ER, praying the
dog made it through the night.
The volunteer
has already started Cody's blog which you can
find
HERE, so start at the bottom and work up
to read all that has gone on so far.
Eventually, Cody landed back into our lives
here at TLC and we just couldn't let him die,
nor let him be turned over to a shelter to die
either.
We had the
procedure was done to put his legs back into
the sockets ($1,800 and counting) by one of
the TLC vets. Even 'twilight sleep' was
dangerous for Cody because of the amount of
fluid that had been building up in his lungs
from the impact with the car. Within
four days the legs came back out of the
sockets, so now Cody is going into dual hip
surgery on Monday ($1,200 each leg) at another
vet's office...
Should I
mention he's also got a dislocated elbow on
his front left leg too? But his lungs
are now clear of the fluid and there no longer
is blood in his urine, plus he's alive.
Despite coming from a puppymill in Iowa less
than two weeks ago, Cody is an exceptionally
sweet little guy and he probably thinks this
has all just been a bad nightmare since August
17th when he was loaded into a plane bound for
California from Iowa... that he'll wake up
soon and none of this has happened!
Donations are
DESPERATELY needed to cover his vet bills -
they can be made online via our donation
section
HERE or sent directly to the vet doing the
surgery on Monday - details and Xrays can be
found on Cody's page

Celebrities Among Us:
Xena's captivating eyes are startling to
behold and a rare treasure as well. Not
only is she beautiful, her personality is
beyond sweet. She's now joined other
canine celebrities in the TLC CafePress store,
helping us to save other dogs from dying in
the area shelters. 100% of the profits
go directly towards saving shelter dogs.
You have to see these eyes...

has them too. He was neutered yesterday
and is now ready to be adopted by some very
lucky furever family!
DID YOU KNOW?
According to
the 2009/2010 National Pet Owners Survey, 62%
of U.S. households own a pet, which equates to
71.4 millions homes. It estimates that $12.2
billion will be spent on veterinary care in
2009. Source: American Pet Products
Association.
In California
shelters alone, since January 1, 2009, 237,457
pets have been killed, and $118,586,524 tax
dollars have been spent to house and kill
animals. - 977 pets a day - $488,010 a day -
$177,635,640 by the end of the year at the
current rate while the State of CA is handing
out IOUs for tax refunds!
70,000
puppies and kittens are born every day in the
U.S. Between four million and six million pets
are euthanized every year because they are
homeless. That means between 11,000 and 16,000
pets are euthanized every day simply because
they are homeless.
An animal in a shelter is killed every 1.5
seconds and only one animal in 10 born in the
U.S. gets a good home that lasts a lifetime.
$5000
reward offered by HSUS - Two
more dogfighting rings were raided in Indiana
last week, with one man arrested and over 90
dogs rescued. The Indiana Gaming Commission
and the Indiana State Police headed up the
raids; with the HSUS task force being asked to
assist.

From
our Resource Section:
Dog Fur Trade in China: Every
year, millions of individual animals,
including more than 2 million cats and
hundreds of thousands of dogs, are killed for
their fur in China. Some are strays, and
countless others are companions who once
shared homes with people who loved and cared
for them before the animals were rounded
up—often with metal tongs around their
necks—and tossed, screaming, into a crate.
China is one of the world's largest fur
suppliers, and more than 95 percent of the
country's finished garments are exported—with
many ending up in North America. And as we now
know, Chinese companies have been known to
deliberately mislabel cat and dog fur as
"Asian jackal," "rabbit," or "raccoon" to fool
consumers. Every fur-trimmed collar or other
fur item from China, regardless of the kind of
animal slaughtered to manufacture it, is the
product of cruelty on a truly massive scale.
