TLC Newsletter - 9/23/09        Back to the newsletter page

October is Adopt-A-Dog Month: You can become a hero to a dog this October by observing and celebrating the American Humane Association’s Adopt-A-Dog Month® event. Millions of dogs in shelters are facing an uncertain fate, and many more are joining them each day due to the effects of the recession on pet owners. But there are simple steps each of us can take to make a difference in these dogs’ lives.  Save the day for a homeless dog — and find a faithful companion who will be at your side for all of life’s adventures — by adopting a dog from a shelter or breed-rescue group during October. It’s the perfect time to visit the shelter, meet potential sidekicks and discover how much fun and happiness a dog can add to your life.

Keeping up with the TLC dogs and puppies:

Cody is beginning his hydrotherapy this week - check out his blog to keep up to date to the happenings with him!   Each TLC dog has their own blog, maintained by their foster family - check out their blogs and profiles for more detailed information and photos:

WagWorld:  A new feature of the Beneful site is their WagWorld... If you enter your zip code or city name, you can get a listing of pet-friendly locations to play, stay and eat at.  As I find businesses that are pet-friendly (such as the Simi Town Centre Mall - some merchants even put water bowls outside their doors!), I continue to add them to this website.  If you happen upon a pet-friendly business, we encourage you to do the same!  WagWorld
P.S.  I will make a point to support pet-friendly businesses, especially places that I can eat and bring my dog(s) with me.  If we rally together and encourage our business leaders in our communities to support us pet owners, we can increase the number of places we are welcomed with our extended family four-footed members!

China Dog Cull Averted: Thanks to the immediate response of many supporters, the dog cull in Qinhuangdao (China) has been averted.  The details are still coming in - but it's clear that the government in Qinhuangdao felt the pressure from IFAW and other supporters around the world. Public notices and government web site postings announcing the cull have been taken down.
Special note from the editor: China is the largest exporter of the dog and cat fur trade - many pets are picked up still with collars on, and transported to the fur market outside Beijing to become part of the market in fur products.  This has been documented over and over, but the U.S. has still not halted the importation of dog and cat fur products - from coats to fur adorned pet toys! China does NOT have a rabies program either, so at the first hint of another rabies outbreak, thousands of dogs are culled consistently in China.  More on this subject is located HERE.

Puppy Versus an Adult Dog:  It is the old 'nature versus nurture' issue. We as humans are genetically wired to respond to the small and young.  But are you really ready to handle a puppy?  The majority of the dogs currently in our shelters were bought or adopted as puppies and when someone's life got too hectic --- or they failed (or were unable) to commit the time, training and patience needed to get through the first three years of a small dog's life, they relinquished the outcome to a local shelter.  An older dog is more likely to be content at home alone while you are working - but not a puppy. REMEMBER ALWAYS TO ADOPT AND NOT SHOP!  THE DOGS WILL THANK YOU FOR IT!

This is an opt-in newsletter, so you're free to come and go as you please.  We're hoping you'll be with us for a very long time.  Feel free to pass on our newsletters to other dog lovers... and encourage them to visit us as well!  If you like to suggest a topic or have a question, please contact us.  We'd LOVE to hear from you!
