TLC Newsletter - 12/04/09        Back to the newsletter page

Humane Society launches a national 'Puppymill Tip Line': "Puppy mills are a national scourge," said Justin Scally, manager of The HSUS' Wilde Puppy Mill Task Force. "Hundreds of thousands of dogs across the country are trapped in constant confinement their entire lives, producing puppies to profit the puppy mill owner. This tip line will be a vital tool to help free these dogs from a life of abuse."  Details and the number

First Aid & Emergency Care for Dogs and Cats:  There is a nice (free) eBook available here on the Internet.  It was worth reading through and even printing out a copy and file for when you need to quickly get your hands on this type of information.

BOW WOW Bonanza:  Many of us pet owners are brand-specific when it comes to the supplies we buy our pets.  When we get coupons for other pet supplies we don't use, the coupons go to waste.  TLC has launched a coupon exchange --- and in today's tough economy, everyone can use a little bit of help --- feel free to donate those coupons you don't use (and aren't expired yet) while looking for any that you yourself might be able to use.  BOW WOW Bonanza

Banner year for humane legislation: While California became the first state to ban docking of cow tails, we sadly did not make any progress in the puppymill or backyard breeders front - CA.  Read all the national Details from the ASPCA

Remember, the Calendar Contest ends 12/12/09:  Have you voted for your favorite yet?  TLC calendars will be available for purchase on 12/15/09.  For those that didn't enter their pooch, you can make your own 2010 calendar with their pictures with the scrapbook calendar available at our online store. ALL profits from the sale of the items available at the TLC online store go directly towards saving dogs from dying in the Ventura County and greater Los Angeles shelters!  Do your Christmas shopping online today and save a dog tomorrow!

The best present EVER - a Christmas puppy!  For those thinking of giving a puppy as a Christmas gift, read on...  (make sure to read Rudy's letter to Santa at the very bottom).

Mileage Donation Program: United Animal Nations (UAN) has started a program that allows compassionate people to donate their unused frequent flyer reward miles to the organization.  These donations are used to fly UAN staff and Emergency Animal Rescue Service (EARS) volunteers all over the United States and Canada to care for animals rescued from puppy mills or displaced during natural disasters.  To donate your airline miles for this VERY worthwhile cause, contact UAN at (916) 429-2457 or contact them via email at info@uan.org

Sweaters and Coats Just Aren't "Pretties"!  As the cooler nights and winter approaches, more sweaters and coats appear on our little pet companions.  While some think this too 'humanizes' our beloved canines, there is an art to knowing when your dog should be wearing outerwear, how to fit it properly and of what material it should be made of.  Read the entire article HERE.
Special Note: If you'd like to make a fleece sweater, here are some great direction to follow!

Charleyboy found his furever home:  And it was a touching placement too!  Charleyboy's BLOG... Yay for Charleyboy!  A home just in time for the holidays!

For those that have been following Millie's story, there is an update:

  • Millie's Story: Her back story and arrival with us
  • Millie's Story: The facts and documents she arrived with
  • Millie's Story: And the involvement of AKC
  • Millie's Story: Conclusion?  Did the general public really get what they were paying for or could they have gotten the same quality (or better) at a local shelter or rescue?
  • Millie's Story - Update: On 11/29/09 we went back into that same petshop and looked at another Chihuahua puppy they had available for sale.

Personal note from the Director:  Twelve years ago I started a program online called "Santa's Elves Online".  It continues on with a group of volunteers who write customized (free) emails to children from Santa at this time of year.  We all know how busy Santa gets at this time of year, so of course (smile) his elves need to help out Santa!

REMEMBER ALWAYS TO ADOPT AND NOT SHOP!  THE DOGS WILL THANK YOU FOR IT!

This is an opt-in newsletter, so you're free to come and go as you please.  We're hoping you'll be with us for a very long time.  Feel free to pass on our newsletters to other dog lovers... and encourage them to visit us as well!  If you like to suggest a topic or have a question, please contact us.  We'd LOVE to hear from you!
