How to Choose a
Pet for your Special Needs Child
By Heather Shockney,

When you
think back about your childhood years, I
would bet some of your greatest memories
include spending time with the family pet. A
pet can be a wonderful addition to any
family, if it is the right type of pet for
your family.
A special needs child can benefit greatly
from having a pet. Having a pet teaches your
special needs child how to be responsible.
Pets can teach a child how to have
compassion for others. The key is
choosing the right pet for your special
needs child.
When choosing a pet for your special needs
child you need to figure out what type of
pet would your child be able to interact
with, without causing either the child or
the pet any harm. If your special needs
child is very hyper and jumpy you will have
to find a pet that can tolerate that type of
environment. Some dogs love to be running
and jumping all of the time, while a cat may
prefer a more relaxed quiet home.
You'll want to choose a pet for your special
needs child that will adapt to your family's
schedule easily. You want to be sure you can
devote the right amount of time to caring
for a pet. If your time is limited you may
want to go with a pet that has low daily
maintenance like a fish. A fish tank can be
relaxing for a special needs child. They may
enjoy just sitting and watching the fish
swim about in their tank.
If your special needs child is asking for a
pet hamster or gerbil you may want to
reconsider. Hamsters and gerbils often do
not make good pets for younger children.
They get scared easily and may bite your
child. A guinea pig might be a better
choice. They enjoy being handled more than a
hamster will.
Whatever pet you choose for your special
needs child be sure to do your research
before taking your new family member home.
Make sure you understand what care is
required for your new pet, along with food,
shelter, and vet care. You would be
surprised how much investment can be
required to have a healthy happy pet.
However, a pet can provide your special need
child with a great companion for many years
to come.
It is a good idea to take your child to the
pet store and let them see the different
animals. See if they seem comfortable around
the pet you are considering. Talk with the
employees at the pet store and ask for their
recommendations. The humane society can be a
great place to find a cat or dog for your
special needs child. There are hundreds of
animals waiting for a loving home.
Review of things to consider before choosing
a pet for your special needs child:
- What
amount of care does the pet require?
- What
type of shelter does the pet need?
- What
type of vet care will be needed? (ex.
shots, spay and neuter)
- Does the
pet like to be handled?
- Is the
pet laid back, or are they filled with
energy?
- Will my
special needs child be afraid of the pet,
or do they seem right at home with them?
