Could
You Survive at Half Your Healthy Body
Weight?

A healthy
female Great Dane usually weighs 100 to
130 pounds. Not Izzy.
When this
beautiful white Great Dane’s owner was
reported to a local humane society in
Ohio, the poor dog weighed just 53
pounds.
The worker who investigated the report,
Lisa, soon discovered the horrible
truth. Izzy had been cruelly barricaded
in a filthy garage. The floor was
covered in trash and dark, runny feces
-- a sign of malnutrition. There were no
windows or ventilation of any kind…and
no food or water dishes.
Izzy herself was barely alive. As soon
as Lisa opened the garage door, the
emaciated dog staggered out and
collapsed. Her gums were white, her eyes
were sunken, and her bony body was
covered in fleas and ants.

Izzy
Finds a Forever Home
Thanks to caring donors like you,
American Humane was able to help cover
the cost of Izzy’s extensive medical
treatment. Izzy was a beneficiary of our
Second Chance® Fund, which provides
funding to animal shelters that
rehabilitate abused and neglected pets.
Remarkably,
Izzy now weighs nearly 100 pounds and is
having the time of her life in her new
forever home. Her devoted owners always
leave food out for her to “graze” on,
and even hand-feed her yogurt to aid her
digestion. It will certainly be a
special holiday season for Izzy and her
adoptive family!
As for Izzy’s former owner, he was
recently convicted of animal cruelty,
sentenced to time in jail and prohibited
from owning animals in the future.
Please
donate today to give more abused and
neglected pets like Izzy the second
chance they deserve!

Another
detailed mention of Izzy:
When
a Williams County, Ohio, humane officer
received a call reporting a very skinny
dog that appeared to be a greyhound on a
rural property, she could not have
imagined the horror she would actually
find: Izzy, a starving 7-month-old
female Great Dane who weighed an
appalling 53 pounds. The skeleton-like
dog -- who was being kept in a trash-
and feces-filled garage with no
ventilation, sunlight, food or water --
collapsed as she was greeted by the
officer, who immediately called for
backup to remove Izzy, two other
emaciated dogs and three kittens.
After the
animals were taken to The Williams
County Humane Society, Izzy was
transferred to a nearby veterinary
clinic for emergency medical care. A
Second Chance Fund Grant from American
Humane helped subsidize treatment for
her extensive medical problems,
including malnutrition, dehydration,
fleas, and multiple open wounds on her
face and legs. Today, Izzy is slowly
putting on weight and being treated like
a queen while she continues to recover
back at the shelter. According to the
humane officer who rescued Izzy, “Her
eyes say it all now: Thank you.”
